gen Interruptions! pdf

Yup – sure enough, yesterday afternoon, a 7 year old power supply decided to give up the ghost, and took the little linux computer in the basesment's motherboard, memory, and at least one of the hard drives with it.

The good news, (well, as good as I can get today) is the new hardware is on order (newegg to the rescue!). The bad news is I run back ups on the weekends, so posting-wise we're back to Sunday the 25th.

To get the site back up, I had to run a cable from the basement to the living room. For maybe the first time *ever*, I wired both ends of an RJ-45 cable right in one try (amazing!). I'll use this as an excuse to upgrade to the latest version of CentOS, Tomcat 6.x, and Firebird 2.x and slip in some much faster hardware...The “bottleneck” is still going to be the network connection you will probably not see much difference.

So far, the site has gone through 3 motherboards and CPU's, 3 hard drives, (now) 2 power supplies, 1 UPS (lightning last year – one stike zapped the UPS and 2 motherboards), and of all things – 1 video card. It sounds like a lot of stuff, but it's all been “odds-and-ends” hardware that I've had for a long time. The power supply that went out yesterday, for example, started life in a computer I built in 2002 (in grad school). 7 years of almost non-stop operatation is not too shabby for a 400w power supply, eh? (lol – it's an Antec – I recommend them...I use Asus motherboards, too...Still looking for trustworthy, affordable UPS's, though)

So, I guess you could say I've got an “infrastructure project” of my own to work on!!!

I wondered what happened!  Good job getting it back up so quickly.

Sometimes I have to make cables too and I am absolutely terrible at it as well.   Just don't do it often enough - at least that is my excuse....

lol - yeah... green-white...green...orange-white...blue...blue-white...orange...brown-white...brown!!!!....4 new connectors all worked perfectly the first time...It's a miracle!!!

On the new system, I'll figure out a way to ftp (inside the house) the database files off the machine every night.  I didn't loose any code, but loosing almost a weeks worth of really good comments is killing me....I'm not happy with the "Saturday night backup" strategy...Hellooooo crontab!!!

Well, ur a heck of a lot better than me if you remember that with out looking it up.   I keep all my “notes” in my blackberry and have to look it up every single time I do it.   And then it still doesn’t work half the time!!

This year they just canceled the contract and made us take over phones - which never in my life have I done and now I am somehow working with people who remember 25 colors and where they all go!!   My head is too full for all that.
