spcrnr Open Thread for the Week of October 18 pdf

Some of our most productive and interesting conversations have come from open threads where almost anything goes. Speaker's Corner is a topic that is dedicated to open-conversation about almost anything that's on your mind.
The real Speaker's Corner is located in the north-east corner of London's Hyde Park where public speaking is allowed. There is no immunity from the law at speaker's corner, and while the police tend to be tolerant, they do not allow profanity or unlawful behavior. You may be jeered, ridiculed, enthusiastically supported, or completely ignored. Now, what's on your mind?

Watch this for an interesting and long term perspective and history on the financial collapse.    And the need for re-regulation of the financial markets.

This is a copy and paste from my blog but I wanted to get the word out to as many as possible:

A member of the high task force will be presenting the four options presently being discussed for improving Decatur’s public high schools at our neighborhood meeting tonight.  Whether you have kids or not in Decatur public schools this will affect you and Decatur for many years to come!  The meeting is open to anyone, in our neighborhood or elsewhere, who would like to learn more about the proposals.  The school district is also seeking your input.  Our neighborhood group will be the first that the task force has visited, so come on out!   We don’t bite and you are most certainly welcome.

Where:  Oak Grove Church of the Nazarene, 1890 W. Garfield Ave.  Drive West on Ravina Park Rd and turn left on Summit Ave.  The church is a few blocks to the South on the corner of Summit and Garfield.  The meeting is from 7:00-8:00pm.

Matt, do you know what is going in next to Dollar General on 36 east? I thought it was just a parking lot expansion, but now they have forms for a foundation there.

Hey another question -  anyone know what is going in where they just took down the old Stop and Go up on Pershing and 51 that Kris and I have been complaining about for ever?   Boy I'm I pleased to see that.   Its down and it looks like something new going in.

Steve, I saw a sign that said "Body Works" or something like that for that site.  I'm not sure if that's auto body or human body but it's some kind of body shop.  ;-)

"Hey another question -  anyone know what is going in where they just took down the old Stop and Go up on Pershing and 51 that Kris and I have been complaining about for ever?"

LOL!  Sue, I only recall complaining about that station 100-200 times tops.  :-)  My husband stopped there a couple weeks ago to talk to the concrete company working at the site.  He wanted to see if he could offer landscaping services to whatever was going there.  The concrete guy told him it's a Wendy's and they want to be open by December.  And I think there's new restaurant opening soon or already open in the former Wendy's.  I'm not sure what kind of food but it's nice to see some positive things happening there!

Now if someone would get rid of that hideous liquor store in the middle of 48 by Colonial Mall I'd jump for joy.  I get a laugh everytime I drive by it because it's so ridiculous looking.  Where's a tornado when you need one?  Blow that building away and hop over to the Barnes Parking Garage, the old Wagners and Roach School and that would be great.
