The Decatur Celebration August  7, 8 and 9
Feel free to post comment/suggestions about what to do/see here.  I'll do so throughout the weekend...

Also, just for the heck of it I'll offer the parking lot to park in for free (none of the $3-$5 BS!)....However, if I come out and act grumpy (which I may well do), tell me "You read that it was OK on the blog", and I'll be cool with it (lol - who am I trying to kid?!?! - I'll be flattered!!!).

Post Celebration post…
First the obvious – it was hot during the daytime, and very nice at dusk and nighttime. The vegetable stir-fry, bacon-cheese-pork sandwiches and elephant ears are excellent, and the strawberry crepes from Paris Texas are our favorites.
In other news – Teak furniture is cool and my last forever, but it’s not all that comfortable. We managed to miss the wooden roses (where were they this year)?
Overall, I think there were fewer vendors but it “felt” like those who were there had better mix of goods. I spent about 3 times as much at the Celebration as I normally do. There were not quite as many people bumping around, and it was a lot easier to get food/drink/goodies. Same goes for my wife and kids.

What did everyone else think?

Oh yeah, and on the environmental side – through the whole weekend, we had a total of 2 cans, 1 plastic bottle, 1 chewing tobacco tin, and 1 paper towel tossed in the front and side yards.  That’s pretty much the same amount of flotsam and jetsam we see during a normal summer weekend…In short, everyone did a great job of keeping track of their own trash!
As a resident of near-downtown, I’d like to say – Thanks for not littering!!!

I liked the overall experience.  We went down Friday night when it was raining.  After the rain stopped it was really nice.  Ahhh, I would have preferred the same weather Saturday and Sunday.  I hate hot weather.  I really wish they'd pick a different month than August for the Celebration because the weather usually stinks.  Once in a while we'll luck out but most of the time, it's too dang hot!   Loved the Lincoln stuff.  I wish the weather would have been better so I could have gone down and watched the railsplitting contest and other events.

We ate philly cheese steaks and of course, elephant ears.  We stepped into Porters on Merchant Street to get out of the rain Friday and their cheeseburger are very good.  They're made with real beef!  I'd never heard of the restaurant before but my husband saw their sign on the sidewalk advertising their burgers.  Kind of expensive.  Great for couples but I'd leave the kids with Grandma - if you want to save some money and enjoy the atmosphere.

Summary:  Well planned Celebration and I enjoyed the theme but lousy weather both Saturday and Sunday.
