Unfortunately, I’m 85% sure I’ll miss the City Council meeting tonight. This crazy little thing called work is most almost certainly going to prevent me from attending…Arrgh!
Anyway, here’s the schedule (copied from the City’s website):
I. Call to Order
1. Roll Call
2. Pledge of Allegiance
3. Invocation
III. New Business
1. Proclamations and Recognitions
A. Proclamations
B. Mayor’s Recognitions
7. CONSENT CALENDAR: Matter listed under the Consent Calendar are considered to be routine and will be enacted by one motion and one vote. If separate action is desired, that item will be removed from Consent Calendar and will be considered separately.
8. Appearance of Citizens
Policy relative to Appearance of Citizens:

A 15 minute time period is provided for citizens to appear and express their views before the City Council. Each citizen who appears will be limited to 3 minutes. No immediate response will be given by City Council or City staff members.
9. Other Business

We'll still try to attend - I'm not holding my breath, though...

I'm going to have to listen to the tape again, but during last night's council meeting, did I really hear that council members can accept up to $75 a day from a single person without having any conflict of interest issues popping up? That's over $27,000 a year!!! Surely I heard that wrong!!!

I haven't listened to the meeting yet, but that can't be right.

On another note we went to spend National Night Out with our friends at Nelson Park.   They had quite a showing at least 150 people were there eating and mingling with one another.  I even won a door prize and I will be cashing it in tomorrow night at Cullvers yummmm yummm.  They gave away a door prize every 15 minutes one for an adult and one for a kid it was really nice.  They also had the Park District come out with a blow up game of baseball and soccer, and the Jump House from I think the Air Walk Company. My wife won a beanie baby playing Bingo which was very entertaining.  If you read the paper you saw the big blow up fireman and it was cool watching the little ones eyes light up when this 12 foot blow up man came walking up to them LOL.  The DFD also sent a truck out for the kids to sit in. I wanted to blow the horn but was too shy to ask hehe.  The buses with the dignitaries came about 8:15 for a meet and greet and I thought it went very well.    I met up with an old fishing buddy who is now a volunteer police officer and was part of the motorcade leading the dignitaries which was nice, we haven't talked for about 10 years.  All in all I think National Night Out was a success and next year Ravina/Home Park will be on the route too.

I thought that's what I heard too about the $75 a day...but after our Girl Scouts liquor discussion, I'll wait till it can be confirmed.  Brian Byers did not do my words justice on yesterday's broadcast.  My words are meant to be spoken poetically and with passion - maybe set them to music.  LOL!

Didn't go to any of the NNO activities.  Sound like everybody had a good time.  Been busy busing the kids back and forth to VBS all week.  It'll be nice to have something for Ravina/Home Park next year.  I've lived in the neighborhood since 1995 and there's never been any neighborhood parties or events that I've ever heard of.  We'll be changing that!

I did go for a walk on Ben Franklin School's walking path across from my house yesterday evening.  The school put down a mulch walking path for the kids and four times around it is a mile.  I only went around it twice but my new dog pulled me around it.  She definitely has husky in her!  That was a workout.  A lot of people in the neighborhood have noticed the track.  It's a quiet area and there's usually deer and other critters to see.  It's a great thing for the neighborhood.

I'm going to try to make it to the goal session tonight at the Civic Center.

Kris what words are you talking about?  What did I miss LOL.

We may make it to the tail end of the goal setting meeting - I'm stuck doing a ton of work for the next couple of weeks, and I'm on "the late shift".  Which hour were Brian's comments in?  I haven't listened to yesterday's podcast yet...(yup - behind on that, too!!!)

I watched the council tape and the $75.00 is an allowance for food per day per person not cash under the  Ethics Act.

I think the comments were in the 8:00 hour towards the end.  He talked about our Girl Scouts fund raising discussion.  He complains about us bloggers but I know he really loves us.  :-)

Thanks for clearing that up Doug.  It was for food come to think of it.  That would be a lot of food!  $75 a day for one person!

Yeah, I know they were talking about food, but even so…I’m jumping off a hypothetical tangent, but let’s say someone gifts a council member with a daily bottle of wine @ $74.95 a pop. What’s to prevent the council person from returning the “food” to the store instead of consuming it personally?   I assume once the gift is offered and accepted, the council person could do anything they wanted with it (including return it to the retailer)…
Talk about loopholes in that  one could drive a proverbial camel through!!!

Ok – it turns out it’s part of the Gift Ban Act, and I feel a little better about it.

Here’s a link to the language (5 ILCS 430 article 10):
(8) Food or refreshments not exceeding $75 per person

in value on a single calendar day; provided that the food or refreshments are (i) consumed on the premises from which they were purchased or prepared or (ii) catered. For the purposes of this Section, "catered" means food or refreshments that are purchased ready to eat and delivered by any means.
So, it’s not too loop-holy…;-)
