The weather and scenery on the drive up was beautiful, even though there was a *lot* of road construction along the way.
We stayed at the Stillman Bed and Breakfast, with a host named Dave that really, really, really liked to talk. Debbie had never stayed at a B&B before, and I think she got a real kick out of the experience.
On the B&B owner’s recommendation, we had dinner at a great place: The Perry Street Brasserie – a little pricy, but a dinner we’ll never forget.
We spent the whole day Saturday exploring the back roads, taking in the scenery, and wandering aimlessly through town on foot…Sometimes the best thing to do is an unplanned ramble, and that’s just what we did.
On the way home, we gave ourselves one rule – minimize interstate driving, and maximize scenery. It took about an hour longer than it could have. The weather cooperated, and in the end finally ordered pizza from Del Carmins (see the lesson we learned about pizza!).
Pizza in Galesburg…Our major “lesson learned” for the weekend is there is no such thing as an open local pizza place in Galesburg at 2pm on Sunday afternoons. However, the Sunday-afternoon-private-pizza-party business in Galesburg is thriving! We accidentally crashed two such parties, without realizing…
So in the end, It was a great drive, it wasn’t that expensive, and it was a birthday experience Debbie really liked…
Now, back to work!!!

There's a B&B I want to try in Shelbyville someday. On the topic of B&B's, my dad's friend who owns a Bed & Breakfastin Decatur, has had non-stop business all summer. She thought business was going to be bad due to the economy but it's been great for her. It appears a lot of people going to Springfield to visit the Lincoln sites have discovered Decatur is a lot cheaper to lodge in. And we're only a short drive away from Springfield. What's a half-hour drive when you've already driven 5 hours or more? See people will come to Decatur for Lincoln stuff.
